After two months of frustration on session 11 and looking ahead through the rest of the books, I have decided to give up on this course and move on.

Sessions 1-9 were great, though I only reluctantly spent so much time on chords and strumming (interest in strumming: less than none), but I feel session 10 and on seem to cram way too much in too little time with far too little material; and after a great deal of thought and looking elsewhere this course structure just isn't for me.

I want to play for fun, I never plan to perform, and my time is better spent focusing on what I will enjoy doing as opposed to forcing myself to follow a comprehensive curriculum and hating so much of it. That's not to say that I won't come back to L&M in the future, but I really don't see myself following it as a structured program.

For now I plan to join Guitar Tricks and review everything from the beginning to clean up any gaps or flaws in my technique, then I will focus on learning fingerstyle while continuing to have fun playing melodies.  I am currently challenging myself with Gabriel's Oboe (rhythm challenge!) and Sound of Silence (my simplified arrangement, keeping some chords with the melody line).

I want to thank Steve and the many people who have posted so much valuable info to this forum over the years.  This has helped me tremendously in completing the first 10 sessions over the last 17 months.

For anyone else who gets discouraged, please remember that there are always many ways to learn anything.  If you want to play guitar you can, nothing wrong with changing to a different path, or even several paths, or taking a side-trip for a while.

:P

PJM, it's been nice having you as a fellow student, but don't go away. So you've suspended your activity, so what? Join the Guitar Gathering Forum and stay current with all your fellow students. Your advice will be welcomed by newbies. Please. Lotsa luck :rainbownote:

PJM, I had a similar need to take a side step after finishing Session 12. It was too much technique and theory and I wanted more fun learning and playing real songs. I interrupted the L&M course study and learned songs from the Justinguitar beginner Songbook and the L&M Song Hits for about 6 months. I did return to L&M main course afterwards with fresh energy, and combined the new sessions with building a song repertoire.
All the best with your learning!

Wim.
