I know driving is one thing and carrying gear.. but how many flew to Nashville?
I know that airlines are "trying" to let musicians bring their guitars on board. but only if there is room for it in the over head
(when has an over head been big enough for a guitar?? never seen one)

I'm thinking that if I brought an acoustic and a electric to the conference (plus I'll need a small amp too) I'm probably going to need to check the guitar's (and amp) as baggage.
I can't find a good pricing from the local airlines here on how much per guitar.

but has anyone flown with more than 1 guitar before?

[edit]
I should note,, that I'm on the other side of the border, so I have much higher shipping costs using couriers and I have a custom's forms issues as well.
I'm quite willing to drive the 12-14hrs each way but the wife is not 'on board' with driving there and back just yet.
lots of time to work on that.

I drove so I did not have to worry about transporting my guitars.

Doug, they are not "trying" trying to let musicians bring their guitars on board.  They are required under new regulations to let musicians bring instruments on board "if there is room".   They put the guitars not in the overhead but in the garment closets.   Of course, if you are not one of the first to board, there will be no room.

I have flown many times with a guitar but never with more than one.  And I largely quit flying much after the airlines started charging for luggage.  Not because of that!  I just retired.

But I have often checked my Strat in luggage and have never had a problem.  But I have a TSA compliant hardcase.  I really believe that if you have a case that would be hard for luggage handlers to destroy, you will be ok.  And I don't know why it would be any different for a second guitar.  And, again, I don't know what they are charging.  The times that I have flown since retirement has been on SWA where they don't charge for luggage.

Like Uncle Hammy I drive. You could also box up and ship an amp/guitar. Using FedEx.

So glad these are happening again.  I would love to commit to going next year, but the truth is I probably won't be able to until 2017.  My fingers are crossed there will be one that year too because I would really love to attend one and relatively to a lot of you I'm not so far from TN.  I will also keep my fingers crossed that I'm back on track enough to attend in 2016, but it's much more realistic of me to expect to be able to go in 2017.  Whatever the case, if I'm there or not next year, I hope you guys have a great time and learn lots!

If anyone's willing to share a ballpark figure, what would you estimate a budget would be for the overall trip in regards to the conference, lodging and external conference-related activity expenses not covered by the conference fee?

just guessing since I've never gone.. but
rooms last year $140+taxes + minimum $35 for food per day
so for 5 days,, that's minimum $1,000 right there

add extra for more food (aka bar tab) and shows you're probably talking $1,500 for a Tuesday night to Sunday morning 5 days.

Or spend the $1500 for 3 months camping in the Smokey Mountains, which I chose to do.  Perhaps a cheaper venue could be found,  A guitar trade show isn't a draw for me at all.

Mark.. it was started way back when..
when the students from all over the world wanted to meet Steve Krenz, pay homage and say thanks for the music.
guitar learning just happens to happen when we're there.

Hello All- some great questions being asked!

1. Guitar rentals? I understand the dilemma of traveling and packing a guitar on a plane I will check around the Nashville area and see if this might be an option. I'm sure you can google the music shops and check this out on your own and see if it meets your needs. Know one said it is mandatory to bring a guitar. Does it add to the experience, yes!

2. Personal choice........Guitar Gatherings are a personal choice and should remain a personal choice and not be made into a debate about the right or wrong, merits, cost, etc....... Your decision and choice based on your personal preference of how you want to spend your time, efforts and money! No right or wrong.

3. Cost- know one is advocating selling the house and incurring financial crisis to attend a Gathering. There are so many members who want to meet Steve; experience a learning process that Steve and Special Guest Teachers provide; meet and share a few days of music and friendship; take a different type of vacation and encompass your passion and love for music journey; experience a piece of Music City U.S.A. And I am sure, so many other reasons. Measure, weigh and decide what you want to do on its merits for your life. The Gathering is meant to be a tool in the Guitar/Music journey and we sure don't want it to be tool of conflict and division.

Please continue to share your music experience! I hope we can see as many members at the Gather Gathering as possible. We will endeavor to find ways to share this experience with all members whether you attend or not. Steve provided video and taped sessions and shared them with all members to enclude everyone. We do not want to exclude anyone!

Take care.

Per capita cost goes way down if people can share rooms, and/or share a ride.  In the past, some people that became friends through this forum did just that.

Perhaps a cheaper venue could be found,  A guitar trade show isn't a draw for me at all.

I said it a couple times this year.  Room prices were probably jacked up due to the fact the NAMM was being held at the same time.  Some, I'm sure, found it added to the experience to be able to attend NAMM at the same time as the Guitar Gathering.  Others may prefer to hold the Guitar Gathering at a different time and get cheaper room rates.  But the dates, I'm sure, are now set.

Mato- I did the same search last year in January 2015 and got the same price for July 2015. NAMM had no impact.

I just did a search for this Nov 2015 and June 2016 and got the same room rate. NAMM has nothing to do with the lodging prices. Maybe downtown near the convention Center, which we can't afford anyway, but no impact around airport and Brentwood area where we were last year.

I'm committing to being there this next summer. I swear to Rudy I'm gonna be there.

I will kick any project manager's butt who tries to throw another big project on my team during that month. :) (That's a joke naturally). But I will be there.

Play well,

Bob
