what to do with lens

50mm f1.4

Hello? I am new to digital camera world and I am studying the "Learn & Master Photography" course. Before I study this course, I bought Canon T3i and 50mm f1.4 lens. However, as I study the couse, it seems like the author is using zoom lens.

Here is my question

1) I am wondering whether I have bought wrong lens? Is 50mm f1.4 lens not appropriate for taking portrait (my main reason for studying this course)?

2) If my 50mm f1.4 is not appropriate for portrait, then, which lens should I buy? more specificly, which model lens? which zoom lens or prime lens..?

I am really new to this world and I would appreciate if you could give me feed back regarding my problems..

Zooms are just a bit more versatile. As a general rule, the best quality lenses are primes... I'd stick with what you've got until you find a reason to change - don't just buy something because you think you ought to.

When you find your current lens doesn't actually do something you want... that's the time to buy a new one!
Still bashing the barres in sessions: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7/8/9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20

I just don't get it... I've been doing this for "aaaages" and... I still don't sound like Slash... ;-)
