I think that Lesson 26 - Seventh Chords has an error in the examples on page 94.  The sixth step in the Spelling Seventh Chords examples says "you find a Major 3rd three locations clockwise and one level up." Finding Major 3rds is covered in Lesson 18 which states "for intervals in Locations 0-3 - straight across on the same level and for intervals in Locations 4-7 - straight across, up-right."

Does anyone agree that there is an error?

Steve, I found several minor errors in the lesson book (see attachment), but I don't see the clause you quoted on page 94 at all. Nor do I see "the sixth step in the Spelling Seventh Chords". Can you check and clarify?

Hi Diane - I have the 2015 release of the book.  Could be you have an earlier version.  What I am quoting is the example in Lesson 26 that shows how to spell out 7th cords.  Isthere a way I can connect a picture of it to this discussion group?

Steve, my edition is copyright 2008, so that might explain the difference. I hope they fixed the typos in yours. If you scan the page in question as a pdf or jpg file, you can attach it to your post. Click the "More Reply Options" button below the window, then in the full editor, go to the "Choose Files…" button. (Or send me a private message.)

I learned the seventh chords in terms of the root, and to derive the intervals from those patterns:
Major 7: 1-3-5-7
Dominant 7: 1-3-5-b7
Minor 7: 1-b3-5-b7
Half dim 7 (m7b5): 1-b3-b5-b7
Dim 7: 1-b3-b5-bb7
Attached is a chord construction worksheet I made for review.
